Happy Holidays

Happy holidays everyone.  With New Year’s approaching, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on 2009.  I was admitted to the Maryland State Bar at the end of 2008, and began practicing law in early 2009.  In July, I started my own law practice.  What an adventure!  To paraphrase Isaac Newton, to see further, we must stand on the shoulders of those giants that came before us.  This is as true for new lawyers today as it was for physicists of Newton’s day.  I am very thankful for all of the support I have received from friends, family, colleagues, and complete strangers (such as fellow solo attorneys, the many clerks at the various courthouses who I must regularly call on for help with filing papers or requesting documents, and those who have contacted me for the first time to help them with a legal matter).

This year has generally been a successful year.  I have been involved in several cases that ended in settlements that were favorable for my clients, including two contract disputes and a landlord/tenant dispute.  I have also come to appreciate just how intractable some civil matters can be, particularly when it comes to family law matters.  Hats off to those practitioners that make family law their full time specialty.  For everybody else: that’s an area of the law that is a lot harder than it looks!  On a personal note, I also got engaged to be married next year to a wonderful lady, have had the pleasure of meeting a whole lot of new people from all over, moved to Towson, and aspire to one day permanently relocate to a beach, somewhere warm.

2009 was also a difficult year for many.  At the end of 2008, we all witnessed the melt down of some of our largest institutions as a result of the sub prime mortgage mess.  We’ve also experienced an energy crisis which has led to many of our domestic automakers to stop making whole lines of cars, shut down numerous dealerships throughout the country, and cause many of our friends and neighbors to become unemployed.  And never mind the fact that our nation continues to fight two wars in foreign lands at great cost to the many men and women of our military and the citizens of those nations.  In spite of these hardships, there is some evidence that our nation is getting back on its feet, as fewer people are filing for unemployment, the stock market has recovered some of its pre-implosion value, and some areas of the housing market have begun to improve.

I am looking forward to 2010.  Not only was this year the subject of an epic sci-fi sequel (2010: The Year We Make Contact), but it is also the start of a new decade and presents an opportunity for all of us to do good.  For 2010, one of my resolutions is to offer more legal services online for those of you so inclined.  I have therefore partnered with DirectLaw to begin providing document production, secure messaging, secure document sharing, and credit card processing services for new and existing clients.  I hope to provide more clients with quality legal services at a more affordable cost for those that need help incorporating a new business, drafting a standard will, or need a contract or other document reviewed by an attorney.  I look forward to helping all of you to succeed in 2010.  Happy Holidays.
